Around the 5th century, a Buddhist monk from southern India arrived in China. Few historic al fac ts have survived about Bodhidharma, as he is know n, though t he legends surrounding him would have us believe that he was a truly remarkable individual. To Bodhidharma is ascribed the practice known worldwide as Zen ( from the Sanskrit ,'Dhyan' to the Chinese 'Ch'an', meaning meditation or contemplation ).
